Bud, Not Buddy

Title: Bud, Not Buddy

Author: Christopher Paul Curtis

Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction

Age Level: 6th-8th

Summary: An orphaned boy named Bud, not Buddy is determined to find a family. After four years in an orphanage at the height of the Great Depression and a bad experience in a foster home placement, Bud sets out on a journey from Flint, Michigan to Grand Rapids on foot. With only a suitcase filled with some of his mother's possessions which he believes are clues to finding his father, Bud finds the man he believes to be his father, a legendary jazz musician named Herman E. Calloway. The band takes him under their wing. Finally, it is discovered that Herman E. Calloway is not Bud's father, but his grandfather. Many years ago Bud's mother ran away, and now her son is reunited with the family she left, and for the first time since his mother died, Bud feels at home.  This book is a great read that is for older readers because it is a chapter book.  I believe this book would be popular among students in my class because of the multicultural aspect of the book.

The book is the winner of the 2000 Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature, as well as the Coretta Scott King Award that is given in recognition of outstanding African-American authors
