The Gingerbread Man

Title: The Gingerbread Man
Author: Jim Aylesworth
Illustrator: Barbara McClintock
Age: K-10

In the retelling of this tale, not much new or exciting is added. The tale is very traditional so it is the illustrations that really add the energy to this version. A mix of both human and animal characters (all dressed in human clothing) is an interesting combination. The repetitive verse of the story can be chanted by students who are reading along with the book. Cleverly, the back cover contains a recipe for gingerbread and warns the reader to take care when opening the oven door. This provides an element of hands-on possibility to enhance the experience of the book.
