Title: Snowflake Bentley
Author: Jacqueline Briggs Martin
Illustrator: Mary Azarian
Award: Caldecott Medal Winner
Age: K-10
This is a very well-told and well-paced true story of the
man who first photographed snowflakes, devoting his life to them. The
illustrations are beautiful and enhance the text. And the way the story is told
-- with some information in the main text and additional factual information in
sidebars on most of the pages -- works very well: it makes the story
multi-layered and very accessible to a wide age group. One of the nice things
about Mr. Bentley's autobiography - is that you can learn some history, you can
learn some science, and you can also simply enjoy the story of a man who was
passionate about what he did.
