Make way for ducklings

Title: Make way for Ducklings
Author/Illustrator: Robert McCloskey
Age: K-10
Award: Caldecott Medal

Make Way for Duckling’s is a book with simple but very detailed drawings. The sketches are all drawn and shaded with a black pencil. The text and illustrations come together to tell a sweet story of Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck. This is an older book but still tells a great story that would be enjoyed by younger students today. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard Duck decide to move to the city with their ducklings. This could be a good book to read to a child if they are moving cities, houses, etc. It is a cute story that teaches the moral of kindness to others. With every flip of a page comes an insight to what it is like in a busy city park. This story was heartwarming and has themes of love, family, and protection. Readers can relate to the mother duck’s love, caring nature, and protection of her ducklings. When reading the book, many comparisons can be drawn between the mother duck and her ducklings and a mother and her child, which may be what makes this book so appealing. The illustrations are soft and are done in brown tones. They also depict the life of a duck from a duck's-eye view. The combination of the text and illustrations work well together, and make the world of a duck come alive in a gentle, exciting, sweet, and effective way
