Odd Boy Out

Title: Odd Boy Out
Author: Don Brown
Age: 7-12

Overall anyone who is interested in learning about Albert Einstein will find this book appealing. It does a terrific job of summarizing his life. All of the information is presented in a clear way. Specifically, it is a good introduction to Einstein, scientists in general, and physics. It is also a book I would share with a student who was feeling like the odd one out. The author addressed some myths at the end of the book about Einstein and I thought that really enhanced the book.
As a teacher, I would read this book and talk with my class about how Einstein felt when he was a child. Then, we would talk about what it would feel like to be different and considered odd. Finally, we would discuss how everyone is different and that's what makes us special. Einstein was considered to be odd and look at all of the great things he accomplishment. All of this reinforces character counts and helps children be thoughtful of the labels they place on others
