When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry

Title: When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry
Author: Molly Bang
Age: K-10
Award: Caldecott Award Winner

Molly Bang's use of color and line to depict Sophie's moods is very visible in this book. When Sophie is really, really angry she is surrounded by vibrating lines of red and purple and it appears she is going to explode! But then she runs and runs out in the forest and the colors change to greens, browns, and finally blues. The pictures do such a great job of conveying not only the storyline, but the emotions, that the words are almost completely unnecessary. This is a great book to encourage discussions about emotions and how we react to them.  It has a great way of explaining the feeling of anger to young children. Children can relate to Sophie in this book because they have all gotten angry before but after hearing this story they will possibly have a better understanding of it. I also like how Sophie finds a place that calms her down. This helps children to maybe think of places they can go to calm down when they are angry. I also like the way they use the term angry instead of mad, this helps to expand the children's vocabulary
